elizabethtown fair, a tradition.

8.31.2016

It's the start to fair season baby! Sure, when I was in high school the fairs were an excuse to hang out with all my friends and eat fair food and play silly games and maybe come home with a goldfish I would kill in a week... but now fair season is more along the lines of checking out the animals, petting the animals, watching the animals pee, covering hands in sanitizer, sitting on tractors.... and yeah maybe some fair food mixed in too. I do miss the lights of the fairs from the nights of my high school summers... but I don't miss the crowds and the what would inevitably be cranky kids. Maybe someday I'll get up enough nerve to tackle a night fair on a summer night. But not this summer. Nope.

The fair is pretty dead during the day time, and tack on to that the intense heat and well... not many people were as crazy as my family and I. It was a typical fair day as fair days go... other than Dominic receiving a lesson in swing procedures. Trial by fire is how I parent what can I say? I'm clearly being sarcastic but I warned him twice and he was juuuuuust out of my reach when he stepped directly in front of a big kid swinging happily away. He tumbled head over tea kettle a few times and just has a few scratches to show for it... quite lucky I would say. Lesson learned? Who can be certain.. I mean really.

Last year's fair here. Year before that here.

a final summer hike

8.30.2016

I'm not sure why we haven't hiked this particular hike sooner? It's really close by with various trails spread around and I mean we didn't do it this time, but there is an ice cream shop juuuuust around the corner. Next time! I'm all about stuffing our days full of all things summer before we are bound to the school's timetable, and so the final hike was squeezed in on a late afternoon last week. To Governor Dick. The trail we wanted led straight through a fenced in area we so kindly referred to as the T-Rex Paddock, much to our children's amusement (not). But we enjoyed it. At the very top there is an eight-story observation tower which I climbed up with Letty. I've done the tower twice before and each time I hate it just as much. Climb up a ladder, step to the side on a platform, climb another ladder, and so on until the top. It makes my stomach lurch for sure. And watching Letty climb up ahead of me was no help. But we made it! And were rewarded with such pretty views!
The kids even want to go back again sometime.... I'm thinking for some nice leaf peepage??

our last few weeks of summer

8.29.2016

The final two weeks of our summer vacation have been chock full of a hundred tiny moments, things missed (and also more of the same) in the previous few months that I just couldn't let go by without squeezing in before school starts (uhm, today). Making every second count like Jack Dawson, that's my game. Swimming and corn on the cob and visiting a giant pet store and playgrounds and ice cream and italian ices and flowers and sunrises and sunsets and biking on trails and being with friends before they too leave us for school and bounce houses and birthday cake and sandboxes and well-visits and cousin time and walks and scooters and water parks and roller coasters and pedicures.... We've done it all, enjoying every moment. And yeah, I wish I still had more time.
Summer of 2016? You were a good one, that's for sure!
