almond cookies patriotic style

These are possibly my all-time favorite cookie. Blame it on the almond. Growing up this cookie only came out to play around Christmasttime. But now that I am the master of the domain in my kitchen (ha!) I can bring them out often! I did it for Valentine's Day and I shall do it again for Independence Day!

The technical name for these would be Spritz cookie. And here is the recipe. If you happen to have a cute little almost four year old at your disposal than lucky you!

1 1/2 cups softened butter 
1 cup sugar
1 egg
2 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon almond extract 

4 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder

Cream butter and sugar. Add egg, milk, vanilla and almond. I always add more almond. Can't have too much almond. Sift flour and baking powder and add gradually to other mixture. 

This is where you add the food coloring. In this case I split the dough into three bowls, one for red, one for blue, and one for (you got it) white. Add sprinkles too!

Bake at 400 for 8 minutes on an ungreased (did you see the three sticks of butter?) cookie sheet. Oh and this makes like 60 cookies if you stick with the same size. Not enough in my opinion. Never enough. To get the "hashtag" look just use a fork...... and lick the bowl.





















So next year I am thinking I will do the red white and blue again but this time do the twist thing. I did that for Letty with leftover dough and ended up thinking it was way better than the regular cookies. Ah you live you learn.
